For this reason, members of the Forum of Ministers Responsible for Immigration (FMRI) met on July 28 to discuss ways to maximize the effectiveness of Canada's immigration system. \n<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; padding-bottom: 8px;\">\nAt this meeting, they committed to work together to increase provincial and territorial participation in immigrant selection processes, eliminate duplication, and increase allocations under the Provincial and Territorial Nominee Programs (PNP) by March 31, 2023. \n<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; padding-bottom: 8px;\">The Honorable Arlene Dunn, Minister Responsible for Immigration, Minister Responsible for Opportunities New Brunswick, and Provincial\/Territorial Co-Chair of the Forum of Ministers Responsible for Immigration said, <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>This joint meeting has allowed us to identify strategies to streamline the immigration process to help provinces and territories meet their respective labour market priorities, while finding ways to be more flexible in our approaches. We will continue to find ways to improve the experience for all immigration applicants and employers throughout the immigration process.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; padding-bottom: 8px;\"> During this meeting, they also agreed to develop <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b> a more flexible and client-oriented immigration system.<\/b><\/span> This includes the need to work in perfect synergy to ensure complementarity and flexibility of programs. This will benefit all prospective immigrants, but especially those who are most vulnerable and affected by the current socio-political crises, including Afghan and Ukrainian refugees. The federal, provincial and territorial governments have taken steps to expedite their arrival and facilitate their access to the services they need to live, work and study.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; padding-bottom: 8px;\"> This meeting of the Forum of Ministers Responsible for Immigration (FMRI) was somewhat bolstered by the announcement this week by the federal Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, the Honorable Sean Fraser, The announcement included the hiring of nearly 1,250 new staff by the end of the fall of 2022 to not only address immigration backlogs to help Canadian businesses grow, but also to return to the standard of timeliness in processing immigration applications and build a stronger, more sustainable immigration system for the long term. By optimizing its immigration system, Canada could increase its ability to \"attract the best talent from around the world and help address key labour shortage issues in sectors such as tourism, health care, agriculture, transportation and skilled trades.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; padding-bottom: 8px;\"> From January 1 to July 31, 2022, Canada issued more than <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>349 000<\/b><\/span> new work permits compared to <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>199 000<\/b><\/span> work permits during all of 2021.
